22nd April 2012 Hessle
Rangers Colts 1 – 7 Beverley Whitestar Athletic Beverley Whitestar Athletic clinched their promotion spot, although not before giving their support a scare. As the first half began Whitestar struggled to get into gear against a determined Hessle side and indeed it was Hessle who threatened early on. Whitestars began to claw their way into the game when Josh Northen and Mikey Ward exchanged passes, presenting an opening for Northen to touch the ball to Alex Ford who whipped in a cross for James Ayre whose shot was blocked and forced away. Despite this promise it was Hessle who took the lead holding onto it to go in at the interval 1-0 up and it could even have been more except for the sparkling form shown once again by Sam Oglesby in the Whitestar goal. The
second half saw Beverley resume their normal standard and a long kick from
Oglesby set up Joe Wardill who made no mistake firing into the net 1-1.
Wardill was instrumental in the second goal too when his cross was met by
strike James Ayre who clipped the ball over the keeper and in to give
Whitestar the lead 1-2. Buoyed by this success Beverley moved into
overdrive with Kurt Pelham jinking around the home defence before placing
the ball low into the corner for 1-3. Captain Mark

Whitestars knowing that a victory was required played outstanding to a man, with a whole host of superb performances. The game got off to a high tempo start with the bulk of the action taking place in the midfield with both teams trying to carve out opportunities.
Beverley’s first opportunity came when Mark Kerman crossed a fine outswinging ball which evaded the heads of his team mates James Ayre and Luke Melia by centimetres with the goal beckoning. Chances were at a premium with Whitestar’s impenetrable defence operating with great efficiency. Jack Johnson weighed in with one crucial challenge after another whilst Mikey Ward showed great energy and timing in his tackling. Kingsbury forced a corner which was whipped in, however keeper Sam Oglesby was on hand, tipping the ball away from the oncoming forward. Beverley counter attacked when the ever impressive Josh Northen intercepted a Kingsbury through ball sweeping a marvellous pass out to James Ayre wide on the right. Ayre fired a wicked ball across the box where Alex Ford was poised to strike, though the Kingsbury defender intervened producing a first class block and the ball went harmlessly away. The action moved to the Beverley end with Kingsbury flashing a cross shot across the face of the goal setting the pulses racing amongst the Whitestar supporters. Whitestar were not deterred with Alex Ford and James Ayre exchanging passes on the right before sweeping the ball in to Max Bentham whose lofted volley was clutched onto by the keeper just under the bar.
The second half began with Kingsbury applying the early pressure nevertheless Sam Oglesby having a fine game was equal to everything they could muster. Still the game remained goalless with Beverley needing the win. Rob Tate was introduced to add some craft and guile to proceedings; he cut the ball out to Mark Kerman who drove the ball over where it was met by James Ayre on the half volley with his shot going marginally wide. The tension was mounting when Kurt Pelham, Alex Ford and James Ayre combined with Ayre being fouled on the edge of the area. The resulting free kick came to Harri Davison who latched onto the loose ball with his goal bound shot being deflected wide of the target. Kurt Pelham and Luke Melia continued to perform an invaluable job in midfield breaking up the play, indeed it was Pelham who dribbled forward before laying an intelligent pass out to Alex Ford. Ford’s shot was spilled by the keeper with man of the match, James Ayre, following up to poke the ball over the line 0-1 Beverley.
Beverley had their precious lead and although the final ten minutes seemingly lasted an eternity, Beverley closed the game out meaning they only need to avoid a heavy defeat next week to secure promotion. Man of the Match James

The next corner was headed out by the defence only to be met by a thunderous drive by Matty Clarke which whistled marginally over the bar. 22nd
January 2012 Beverley
Whitestar Athletic 6–0 Beverley
Whitestar Athletic produced probably their finest performance of the
season I demolishing promotion rivals, North Ferriby Greens 6-0. In tough conditions with a swirling wind Beverley worked effectively as a unit taking an early lead when a throw in found its way to Alex Ford on the left wing. Ford swung his boot at the ball and it literally sailed into the net for 1-0. Whitestars drove forward and when captain, Mark Kerman, sliced open the Ferriby defence with a superb pass Ford looked as though he may add to his tally. This time the keeper denied him yet the pressure was mounting. Defender Jack Johnson fed the pacey James Ayre who took the ball down the lines before seeing the wind thwart his cross when a goal seemed likely. When Ferriby did get the opportunity to attack it was snuffed out by the uncompromising Whitestar defence and this was epitomised by Josh Northen when after intercepting a through ball, he then dummied the attacker, carried the ball forward before passing to the Whitestar’s midfield. It was the impressive Northen who carved open the next chance for Athletic when he laid his pass into the path of Alex Ford who flashed his shot goalbound only to see it strike the post. Ferriby were hanging on and when Ayre again sprinted down the lines before squaring the ball across the box. It was met by the in rushing Mikey Ward whose sliding shot struck the opposite post. The Ferriby resistance was unlocked for the seemingly inevitable second goal when Max Bentham passed around a defender for Alex Ford to clip the ball over the keeper 2-0. Moments later when James Ayre was dragged down in the penalty area the referee pointed to the spot. Alex Ford was coolness personified as he placed his penalty wide of the keeper for 3-0. One more goal was to follow before the interval coming when man of the match, Luke Melia, characteristically won the ball in midfield, passed to Mikey Ward who in turn found James Ayre whose fierce shot hit the net at speed. Beverley continued to control the second half with goalkeeper, Sam Oglesby, equal to anything Ferriby could muster. Matty Clarke and Alex Watson helped marshall the defence into keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet with Callum Williams and Nick Johnson adding some second half craft and energy into the midfield. Whitestars were rewarded when Ayre nipped the ball through to Rob Tate whose shot was parried away, when perhaps a more deserved reward for Tate’s contribution would have been goal number six. This however came from the resulting corner when Ayre tucked the ball away. James Ayre completed his hat trick before the end beautifully lobbing the keeper leaving Ferriby to watch helplessly as the ball bounced into the net.

8th January 2012 Driffield
0 – 13 Beverley Whitestar Athletic Beverley Whitestar Athletic entered 2012 in emphatic style securing a 13-0 victory over Driffield.
Whitestar were fast out of the blocks with Alex Ford latching onto a loose ball then striking low and hard for the opening goal. Moments later it could have been two when Josh Northen angled an excellent pass through to Joe Wardill whose shot was somehow scrambled away. Still Driffield were slightly unfortunate with Beverley’s second when it did come, as a misdirected goal kick was retuned with interest by Alex Ford for 2-0. Driffield tried to fight back and it seemed as though they would indeed claw a goal back when their forward bore down on goal. He was however outmuscled by Matty Clarke who then shepherded the ball back to Sam Oglesby, safe as ever in the Whitestar net. Next Kurt Pelham passed out of defence to James Ayre whose speed took him clear of the Driffield back line. Ayre deftly applied his finish for number three. Five minutes prior to half time Athletic added a fourth when Alex Ford set up Joe Wardill who drilled the ball wide of the keeper and in.
Whitestar moved into overdrive in the second half. Rob Tate, who had entered the fray, clipped a precision pass to Joe Wardill who made no mistake for number five. Nick Johnson was next on the score sheet as he took the ball down the right wing, slamming the ball into the top corner for 6-0. Johnson was instrumental in number seven laying the ball to Joe Wardill whose cross was met by a well-positioned Rob Tate to strike home. Mikey Ward and Mark Kerman combined to provide an opening for Joe Wardill to compete his hatrick scoring from close range. Man of the match, Rob Tate, used his goal poaching instincts to the maximum adding number nine from a Wardill cross and number ten following up a Mikey Ward shot. Whitestars’ midfield had taken full control and it was well measured through balls from playmaker Max Bentham that led to the next two goals. Number eleven was an exquisite finish by Rob Tate for his fourth of the afternoon with number twelve seeing Mikey Ward smashing the ball past the keeper following his well-timed run. Number thirteen looked to have been scored when Callum Williams and Jack Johnson exchanged passes before a Ford cross found Luke Melia who volley was hit with high velocity screaming just over, following a fingertip save from the keeper. Thirteen was nevertheless moments away, with James Ayre flicking the ball into the goal to give Beverley a flying start to 2012.

Whitestar Athletic 9- 0 Withernsea AFC On a blustery day, Beverley Whitestar Athletic emerged in hurricane type force against Withernsea. The lead was captured within three minutes when Mikey Ward threaded the ball to Alex Ford whose lofted cross shot sailed into the top right hand corner. Number two swiftly followed when a fine dribble by Mark Kerman led to Mikey Ward picking up the ball he coolly slotted past the keeper to increase the score. James Ayre was on hand following a defensive error to jab home the third and a near replica of the first goal occurred with this time Ayre as the provider for Alex Ford to smash home the ball from the left wing. Four became five after Ford took advantage of a goal mouth scramble, with Luke Melia and Alex Watson making their presence felt, to prod into the net in order to complete a stunning first half hat trick. Ford however not content with three struck his fourth of the game and Whitestar’s sixth when his close quarters strike took a deflection and passed by the keeper into the back of the goal. Withernsea were shell shocked by this lightening Beverley start and their chances were limited, yet when the Withernsea striker managed to get a yard of space whilst fighting pressure applied by Matty Clarke, Athletic’s keeper, Sam Oglesby was alert enough to race out and narrow the angle meaning the striker’s shot struck the outside of the post and bounced harmlessly away. Athletic continued to threaten with Man of the Match, Max Bentham, firing a shot marginally over the bar from outside of the area. The first half came to a close when Athletic striker, Rob Tate, was tripped in the box and forward James Ayre calmly tucked away the resulting penalty with great precision. Withernsea battled away in the second half to keep the score line down whilst Josh Northen, Jack Johnson and Callum Williams ensured that any Withernsea pressure was quickly closed down. Nevertheless two more goals followed, the first when James Ayre used his pace to hit the byline, he next closed in on goal before intelligently squaring the ball to Rob Tate who banged the ball past the despairing keeper. The final goal came when Max Bentham spun his marker and played a sublime defence splitting ball to Mark Kerman. Kerman still had lots to do and ran down the wing before rifling into the net 9-0. great performance by Mark Kerman, Josh Northen and Luke Melia in defence
kept Batemans at bay. Mikey Ward and Nick Johnson combined well in
midfield, whilst James Ayre and Alex Ford showed great pace and
determination up front. Batemans finally got a forth goal, from a corner
when Whitestar failed to defend a
loose ball, the Batemans forward followed up to poke the ball home. 4-2
to Batemans. Whitestar then got 1 back when James Ayre worked an opening
in the area, hitting a shot the post, then the ball ricochet off a
Batemans defender which broke loose for Mikey Ward to smash home, 4-3 to
Batemans. Whitestar then sensed they had a chance to get back into the
match, pushed for an equaliser, however Batemans had other ideas when
Whitestar were caught on the counter attack and Batemans put the game
beyond doubt scoring goal number 5 to win 5-3. It was very good
performance by Whitestar who held their own for long periods,
against a team 2 leagues higher, the were a lot of tired legs out there
today as Whitestar had a bear 11 players. Man

2nd October 2011 Beverley
Whitestar Athletic 1-1
Hessle Rangers Colts Beverley Whitestar Athletic battled hard in this match with Hessle Rangers Colts and were only denied a deserved victory by an inspired display from the Hessle goalkeeper who managed to frustrate Athletic by producing a series of first class saves. Whitestars got off to a lightening start when Rob Tate slid the ball forward to James Ayre who harried and pressurised the defender before pinching the ball, next coolly rounding the keeper before steadying himself and slotting the ball into the empty net. 1-0. Beverley’s second opportunity arose when Matty Clarke cleared from the back onto Alex Ford who squared the ball allowing Mikey Ward to burst through into the Hessle box. Ward let fly only to see his shot blocked by the Hessle keeper. Moments later Ward went close again as Mark Kerman chipped in a free kick which Ward met on the half volley only to be denied once again by a fine save. Although Beverley were dominating the play Hessle did threaten, but they were met with some fine defending including by Whitestar goalkeeper, Sam Oglesby, putting in yet another solid performance. Of particular note was his awareness in rushing from his line to curtail any Hessle through ball. Beverley continued to press and just prior to half time Rob Tate blasted a shot which the keeper beat away, the ball spun out to the edge of the box to Max Bentham whose trickery forged an opening. Bentham played the ball across and Mikey Ward smashed the ball goal bound only to see his effort parried away. Whitestars went in at the interval leading by a solitary goal which was a well deserved lead although they must have wondered whether they would rue not being able to capitalise further on the chances created.
The second half was a more even affair nevertheless it was Beverley who carved out the most threatening opportunities. Early on Whitestars believed they had doubled their lead when the ever dangerous James Ayre tapped home only to be denied after being ruled marginally offside. Hessle began to press, however the Beverley backline of Alex Watson, Jack Johnson, Mark Kerman and man of the match Josh Northen were in determined mood soaking up all of the Hessle pressure with great aplomb. Still Hessle fought on and their spirit was eventually rewarded when their striker lashed in a shot from distance which crossed the line after coming down off the crossbar 1-1. Encouraged by this Hessle began to push forward, however time after time their attacks were broken down by the accomplished Josh Northen ably assisted by the dogged tackling of Jack Johnson, and the timely interventions of Mark Kerman and the aerial presence of Alex Watson. Whitestars were not a beaten team though and in a game of ebb and flow they surged forward. Alex Ford launched a stinging shot which was destined for the top corner only to be tipped over by the Hessle goalie. Nick Johnson, Luke Melia and Callum Williams were introduced to bolster tired legs. Melia and Williams both winning some crucial balls in the later stages with Johnson’s tenacious play in midfield leading to the ball eventually coming to Rob Tate who twisted and turned before releasing Alex Ford, his shot was blocked only for it to fall to Mikey Ward who fired it in once more. Still there was no way past the resolute Hessle back line and even when a James Ayre lob looked certain to at last beat the keeper an outstretched hand was there to thwart Beverley one last time. The game ended one a piece in a tough but fair spirited game.

25th September 2011 Beverley
Whitestar Athletic suffered an agonising defeat away against North
Ferriby Greens. This proved the catalyst for Beverley taking charge of the game and they effectively dominated the remainder of the game. Chances came thick and fast – Alex Ford played James Ayre through, Ayre showed fantastic strength and composure rounding the keeper and holding off the defender before shooting the ball from an acute angle. The equaliser appeared to have been scored yet the ball struck the post and was scrambled away. Moments later Ford and Ayre combined again with Ford whipping in a cross which Ayre deflected goal wards. It skimmed past the far post and again Beverley were denied by the slimmest of margins. Alex Ford nearly scored himself drilling his shot wide following being set up by Mikey Ward. As the first half drew to a close Mark Kerman swept a free kick through the Ferriby back line, it was latched onto by Rob Tate whose lob whilst beating the keeper just missed the target. The
second half commenced in a similar vein with Beverley dominating the
play searching for that all elusive goal. As Beverley piled on the
pressure Ferriby conceded a penalty for pushing in the box. Rob Tate
stepped up, struck the ball well, although the Ferriby keeper produced a
fine save beating the ball away. The equalising goal just would not
come! Whitestar continued to press sending Luke Melia and Alex Watson
forward as time ran down then with minutes remaining there were three
quick fire goals. Whitestars will reflect on that this was a game that got away as a mountain of chances were not capitalised upon. Man

11th September 2011 Courts
0 - 4 Beverley Whitestar Athletic Beverley Whitestar Athletic proved more that a match for a vastly improved Courts team in their knockout cup opener. In difficult conditions, due to a swirling wind and heavy pitch, Whitestars carved out the initial opening when last season’s leading marksman, James Ayre, completed an overhead kick which passed marginally over the crossbar. Buoyed by this early attempt Beverley pressed ahead and when Rob Tate placed a pass into the path of the advancing Ayre the Courts defence could do nothing apart from bring Ayre crashing down for a free kick just outside the box. Debutant, Alex Ford stepped up and with great aplomb swept the ball over the wall and into the left hand corner 0-1. Beverley were to threaten again when a fine Callum Williams run teed the ball up for Ayre whose half volley tested the Courts keeper. It was not all one way traffic though and Court’s battled hard however they were to come up against an in form Sam Oglesby in the Whitestar’s goal who was the epitome of a safe pair of hands, producing a series of fine saves. The last opening of the half came when Max Bentham slotted a pass through to James Ayre who touched it on for Alex Ford whose shot skimmed the crossbar.
In the second half Beverley began with great purpose with Ayre having a shot saved in the first few seconds. Max Bentham produced some intricate footwork on the edge of the box before having his shot saved and Captain, Mark Kerman, fired two shots screaming over the bar. Eventually the Court’s defence was unlocked by a superb curling ball from central defender, Josh Northern, which allowed Beverley to extend their lead. This time James Ayre was not to be denied as he slipped the ball past the goal keeper and into the empty net 0-2. Whitestar’s best period of the game followed with some high class football. Nick Jackson ever dangerous down the right hand side cut the ball back for Rob Tate to cross in; Mark Kerman laid the ball off to Mikey Ward who forced a good save. Court’s threatened less often in the second half and perhaps their best chance was curtailed by a last ditch interception by the composed Matty Clarke in the heart of the Whitestar’s defence. In fact the commanding performances by Matty Clarke, Josh Northern and ably assisted by defensive midfield play by new signing Luke Melia prevented Courts breaching the Beverley back line. Whitestars finally put the game beyond doubt when an Alex Ford cross was met by a Rob Tate bullet header which tested the goal netting as it flew in. Man of the match, Tate was again instrumental in Whitestars last goal, flicking the ball forward to Mikey Ward who bore down on goal, holding off a posse of challenging defenders before lofting the ball over the keeper for the final score of 0-4.
