Plate Semi Final

Holderness Boys  1 v 2  Beverley Whitestar Tigers

Beverley Whitestar Tigers secured their place in the Plate final with a hard-fought battle against Holderness Boys at Paull.

With the advantage of playing down hill, Holderness Boys managed to open the scoring after only 7 minutes. The Tiger’s keeper Sam Burton came out and initially made a good save, but the ball was not cleared and the Holderness striker shot into the right hand corner.

Tigers fought hard to try to gain an equaliser, but the ground conditions meant that they struggled to find their rhythm in the first half.  Their best opportunity came on 13 minutes when a scramble in the box created opportunities for Lewis Cunningham, Alex Fleeman and Connor Spence, but the crossbar and good goalkeeping kept the Tigers out.

Josh Gillet and Simon Bromwich helped to maintain the pressure on the Holderness Boys’ defence, but they were unable to find the crucial goal their efforts deserved.

In the 2nd half the Tigers introduced some fresh legs and, playing down hill, they stepped up a gear and dominated much of the 2nd half.  With Connor Spence now up front, and Joe Jowsey and James Preston on the right holding the ball up well, Tigers made some neat passing moves and created a number of chances.  The Holderness Boys’ defence was under increasing pressure, as the Tigers won a number of free kicks and corners. It was finally from a Jowsey corner on 12 minutes that the equaliser came, when the ball was volleyed home by Fleeman to make it 1:1.   On 24 minutes Tigers took a 2:1 lead when Minshall shot home from another corner.

With the Tigers dominant and now playing with confidence, it was always going to be difficult for Holderness Boys to score an equaliser, and so it proved.  With Minshall at the heart of all the action, the Tigers held on for a well-deserved victory and booked their place in their 2nd successive final.

The Tigers man of the match was awarded to Matthew Minshall and the coaches player of the week was Simon Bromwich.
